Web Site

Amongst other things you should seriously consider the following guidelines.

Ensure that there is a good balance of text and images, bearing in mind the emphasis placed on accessibility.

Check and recheck your colour schemes for readability and accessibility in general.

Use colours that are safe for the web.

Use links at bottom of page to top if the page is long, (If all of it cannot be viewed on the screen at the same time)

If frames are being used - don't forget alternative links.

Ensure that you have chosen your links from reliable sources and prove your case.

Don't forget to use the  list of evaluation criteria to evaluate every site in a consistent way.

Make sure you have investigated your subject properly in order to get the message across to the user.

A paragraph of relevant information should support each link - in order that the user can judge whether the site is worth browsing.

If you have employed a grading system to evaluate your links then inform the user of the rank you have chosen for each link - perhaps in the informative paragraph.

Ensure that your subject matter is categorised in order to point the user to the relevant category; reflect this in your navigation.

Ensure that you explain the rationale and logic behind your choice of categories.

It is important that your team reviews the content of the site and eradicates any grammatical or spelling errors. Check for these errors against a UK English spellchecker.

Report

Make sure that you have revised your report writing skills... Check your knowledge of this by referring to your notes and tutorials from your first semester's studies.

The report writing document can still be downloaded from Blackboard.

The search operators used...

The successes and failures of using your chosen techniques, search terms and operators...

Conclusion

The conclusions reached by the team.. this is a chance to consolidate all of the ideas of searching and web design, showing limitations and benefits of the system. Also give a breakdown of any problems encountered.

Presentation

You must present your ideas in a formal report using a conventional Report writing style... You covered report writing in your first semester - utilise the skills learned... Grammatical and spelling errors will be penalised...

Assignment Name

[Your Given Subject] Gateway

Perhaps on the front cover and also in the running head

 Ownership

The names and team roles of  your 'Team Members' clearly written' in an appropriate place at the beginning of the document - so that it is clear from the beginning who is responsible for the work in your assignment. Also, think about including information in the running head and foot of your document - so that it is clear again who owns the document. Page numbering 'Page x of y'  in the running foot. The date that the work was finalised at the beginning of the document and in the running foot.

IntroductionTop

This should not be a one liner but it also should be brief and concise (you have to watch your word count). Treat the assignment as if it were a professional project. Let the reader know the salient points to be expanded later in the main body of the document.  Make it clear why a gateway in your given subject is necessary and useful. Highlight the main benefits of producing such a gateway perhaps in an introductory paragraph followed by a bulleted list.

Search Engines UsedTop

This carries a fair proportion of marks and is one of the main sections of the report. Its no use producing a short list of search tools and hoping for the best. You need to demonstrate to the reader that you have an in depth knowledge of the search tools you chose to use to find your links. Avoid using references to information you were given in tutorials parrot fashion. The reader wants to now that you are knowledgeable about the subject because you carried out careful analysis on a range of search tools. If you didn't choose a particular search tool - give a good reason why not and some negative facts that you found out yourself by using the tool. Conversely show that the search tools you did choose had the same careful analytical treatment and give  positive reasons. Your team's opinions are to be assessed and they should reflect, the fact, that a methodical review of both good and bad search tools was undertaken in order to filter the bad from the good. What results did you obtain to support your decisions. To avoid using up your word count by discussing all your results - give a good balance of good and bad eaxamples and refer to perhaps a list of searches in an appendix.

Discussion of Search TechniquesTop

Outline the thinking that went behind how you tackled your searches. How did you develop a set of keywords and use them in different combinations and different types of search to obtain the best set of results. Discuss the results you obtained from each engine giving good and bad examples. What search operators were used and why did some prove better than others. Discuss successful and unsuccessful searches and your opinions of why things worked or didn't work.

ConclusionsTop

The conclusions reached by the team.. this is a chance to consolidate all of the ideas of searching and web design, showing limitations and benefits of the system. Also give a breakdown of any problems encountered. What you conclude is your opinion of how well your strategies worked. If problems occurred - why did it happen.

PresentationTop

The presentation of your work is in a standard report format. Use the techniques that you learned in your study skills (semester 1) and the Report writing skill that you learned. Ensure that your headings are consistent (use your knowledge of styles). Check and recheck your spelling and grammar by using available tools in your word processor. Make sure that you use all of the headings expected see above...
