Do you remember Duff's the electrical shop
up by the baths end of lodgy? Duffs was first set up in Lodge Lane in
case their other shop in Smithdown Road (originally set up in 1930)was
bombed by the Luftwaffe during the war. (later their fears were realised
and it was bombed in May1941. The bombings in May were the worst of the
whole war.

1741 people were killed and 1154 people
were seriously injured throughout Merseyside between 1 – 7 May. My mother
told me that our house was bombed whilst she was carrying me - but of
course I was born 2 years later.
Between August 1940 and January 1942,
almost 4000 people were killed and 3500 seriously injured in Merseyside
as the result of German air raids.
I was told many years ago that one of the
big houses in
Grove Park at the bottom of Lodge Lane was a command headquarters for
the Allies... Certainly the 'Western Approaches Command' headquarters was
based in the depths of Exchange
Buildings...
